I guess Eric has really inspired me - this will be my second post in one day!Generally we are not supposed to take pictures while out and about here in Abuja (for "security reasons") - doing so typically results in getting taken into custody by the police and having your camera confiscated. However, in October we traveled out of Abuja for the Muslim Durbar celebration in the city of Zaria. Luckily at events such as this we are encouraged to take photos and so I thought I would finally post them. The Durbar is basically a parade where all of the clans and tribes in the area dress themselves and their horses (or in some cases camels, hyenas, monkeys and snakes!) in fabulous colored garb and march before the Emir (the local religious leader). It also marks the end of fasting so it a big celebration. It was amazing to see the masses of people and all the many different tribes. We were lucky enough to be invited guests and be allowed to sit in the covered pavilion at the Emir's palace for most of the parade - so not only did we have a great view but we were spared the direct sun and 100 degree weather! Sorry this pic is bad quality, but hopefully you can make out the hyena and monkey. It seems a little cruel but the people actually take good care of the animals.
