The Kite Festival is basically the opening event of the two week long Cherry Blossom Festival here in DC. Unfortunately it turned kind of cloudy so some of the pictures aren't so clear; but we did take quite a few. We took the Metro to the Smithsonian stop and walked around The Mall looking at all the kites flying in front of the Washington Monument and then walked around the Tidal Basin to see the Cherry Blossom Trees. We also stopped at the Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memoral and Vietnam Memorial. Although The Wall was not as tall as I imagined, it is quite long and the number of names on it was intensely emotional to see. Even though there were literally hundreds of people standing in front of it, is was so very quiet, no one was talking. I have to admit that I was a bit overwhelmed by the emotion of it and started to cry. It was really quite an experience.
DC has a lot of beautiful green space and it is fantastic how you can just picnic or lay in the grass just about anywhere. There is stil a lot to see though and we are going to try to do it all before we leave. In the meantime, here are some pictures from our day:
